Data Centers & Service Offering
Data centers are essential infrastructure for today’s society. They process and store the vast amounts of information that power global business operations, governmental services, and everyday digital interactions. From individuals to enterprises to public institutions, our interconnected world depends on these facilities to function efficiently and at scale.
Data center challenges
Against the backdrop of constant change and an ever-increasing demand for data processing and storage capacity, data centers face a wide range of challenges. The critical and complex context in which data centers operate requires both flexibility and resilience besides the ability to keep up with technological developments and corresponding threats.
The notion of challenge for data centers is not limited to these aspects but includes many more angles. Data centers must address multiple critical priorities: operational continuity, service availability, cybersecurity, resilience, reliable power supply, and compliance with international regulations and sector-specific standards,
The list of challenges would not be complete without mentioning the topic of sustainability. This relates in particular to the necessity of energy efficiency and the reduction of CO₂ emissions besides other environmental and health and safety concerns. Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) related accountability and transparency – covered by the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and Voluntary Sustainability Reporting Standard for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (VSME) reporting frameworks – is yet another aspect which data center operators need to consider as part of their business agenda.
Organizational and technical infrastructure
The abundance of critical success factors and challenges data operators face – whether enterprise data centers, colocation data centers or multi-tenant hosting data centers – points at the bare necessity of having a robust organizational and technical infrastructure in place at every stage of the life cycle of a data center.
Life cycle phases
Data center operators are confronted with specific requirements and challenges which vary per phase of the life cycle of data centers. This life cycle starts with the design and construction phase which is followed by the operational phase. In some cases operators plan an extension of their existing data center activities, either in terms of widening their scope of activity, scaling up their technical infrastructure or both. The decommissioning of data center activity marks the end of the life cycle and every step requires different actions and needs.
