Bureau Veritas inspects your sprinkler system
For many decades, sprinkler systems have protected buildings, assets and people against the effects of fire. There are various reasons for installing a sprinkler system. A user or owner may wish to reduce fire risks, an insurer may require a system as part of an insurance policy, or a public authority may make it a condition for granting a building or environmental permit. This is often an equivalence-based solution under the Besluit bouwwerken leefomgeving (Bbl), which came into force on 1 January 2024.
In all cases, the sprinkler system must be appropriate for the risk and the documented design basis. An inspection certificate may be required to demonstrate adequate protection. Bureau Veritas independently assesses the system. Depending on the scope of the inspection, we assess the documented design basis, the detailed design and the completed installation. Where the agreed assignment includes inspection of the completed system, an inspection certificate may be issued following a positive final inspection conclusion.
Applications of sprinkler systems
A sprinkler system is designed and installed based on the user's requirements and the documented design basis. Its use may allow for an alternative approach to fire compartmentation, escape routes, fire-resistant primary load-bearing structures and measures to prevent the spread of fire. Sprinkler systems are used across all market segments, including industry, large warehouses, office buildings and shopping centres. Environmental considerations also play a role.
Applicable standards
Standards and rules that may apply to sprinkler-system inspections include CEA 4001 (Sprinkler Systems), standards of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), FM Global standards, FOC rules, NEN-EN 12845 together with NEN 1073 for fixed firefighting systems and automatic sprinkler systems, VAS (Regulations for Automatic Sprinkler Systems) and VdS standards.
Inspection under the CCV inspection schemes
Inspections may be carried out against derived objectives under the applicable CCV inspection scheme for fire protection. Depending on the scope of the assignment, Bureau Veritas assesses the documented design basis, the detailed design and the completed installation. Where the agreed assignment includes inspection of the completed system, an inspection certificate may be issued following a positive final inspection conclusion. At PGS sites, additional requirements may apply under the environmental permit, PGS 15 and the relevant inspection schemes.
Accreditation by the Dutch Accreditation Council
For inspection activities that fall within the accredited scope, Bureau Veritas is accredited by the Dutch Accreditation Council (RvA) under registration number I 002 as an independent Type A inspection body. Depending on the system and agreed scope, this may include inspections against derived objectives, inspections of conformity with the UPD-PGS and inspections of conformity with applicable standards. We also carry out sample inspections on behalf of certification bodies where applicable.
