Why have a periodic ATEX inspection?

Explosion-protected equipment must be suitable for the relevant hazardous area and must be correctly installed and connected. Its explosion-protection properties must also be maintained throughout the service life of the installation.

With a periodic ATEX inspection, Bureau Veritas assesses whether the electrical installation and installed equipment continue to meet the technical requirements and safety provisions. This is important where the explosion hazard cannot be fully eliminated by substituting substances.

INSPECTION METHODOLOGY

The purpose of the periodic electrical installation inspection and of the selected equipment in hazardous areas is to check that it still complies with the technical requirements and safety regulations, as well as the prevention of gas and dust explosions.

During a periodic inspection, the installed explosion-proof equipment in a zoned area is inspected in accordance with NEN-EN-IEC 60079-17.

In consultation with the installation manager, an inspection plan is drawn up in accordance with the applicable stipulations. The type of inspection and the corresponding inspection frequency are adjusted, among other things.

Often, a six-yearly detailed inspection is opted for, which is alternated with a three-yearly close inspection.

A six-yearly detailed inspection is a so-called open inspection in which the equipment is opened. Various equipment such as intrinsically safe equipment and installations for lighting and heat tracing can be inspected while operational. Inspection of equipment such as electric motors and the like can generally only be carried out when it is electrically secured. The three-yearly close inspection is an inspection type based on a manual and visual inspection, and can normally be carried out during normal operation.

INSPECTION PLAN

A widely applied inspection plan, based on a detailed inspection alternated with a close inspection, has a cycle of six years. Thereafter, it can be re-tuned or restarted.

If the entire location and scope of the inspection includes too much equipment, it can be proposed in consultation to split the inspection into, for example, three parts. In this case, part of the installation is inspected annually, resulting in a complete inspection over a lead time of three years. An additional advantage of this is that the repair work can also be carried out over three years.
