Frequently asked questions about ISO 9001 certification

  • 1. Why is it called ISO 9001:2015?

    The year identifies the edition. ISO 9001:2015 was published in 2015 and replaced ISO 9001:2008.

    ISO standards are reviewed periodically to reflect changing expectations, technologies and quality management practices.

    The 2015 edition introduced:

    • a shared management system structure to support integration with other standards;

    • greater emphasis on risk-based thinking and managing risks and opportunities;

    • a stronger role for top management in quality management.

  • 2. How do we start with ISO 9001 certification?

    Review how ISO 9001 applies to your organisation, processes and intended certification scope.

    Bureau Veritas discusses your activities, employee numbers, sites and scope with you before preparing a tailored certification proposal.

    An optional gap analysis or pre-audit can identify areas needing attention before the formal Certification Audit.

  • 3. Which organisations can be ISO 9001 certified?

    ISO 9001 suits organisations of any size and sector, including manufacturing, construction, technical services, logistics, IT, consultancy, wholesale, distribution and education.

    Examples include:

    • Manufacturing and suppliers: Demonstrate process control, reduce errors and meet customer or supplier requirements, particularly where documented quality management is expected.

    • Construction, installation and technical services : Support traceability, consistent delivery and quality assurance in public and private tenders.

    • Logistics, storage and transport: Improve delivery reliability, reduce operational errors and demonstrate consistent service quality across complex supply chains.

    • Life sciences, pharmaceuticals and medical sectors: Structure process control, documentation and traceability to support sector-specific requirements.

    • IT, consultancy and business services: Demonstrate process maturity, governance and service quality, particularly for larger customers and outsourcing contracts.

    • Trade, wholesale and distribution: Improve control of goods receipt, order processing, goods handling and customer service.

    • Growing SMEs: Strengthen internal processes, develop professional ways of working and support access to new customers.
