Transformer Oil Condition Monitoring

Transformer Oil Condition Monitoring

Regular analysis of transformer oils will help asset managers monitor the condition of transformers so early action can be taken before dangerous and costly malfunction. This will help mitigate health, safety and environmental risks.

Bureau Veritas provides comprehensive transformer oil analysis and reporting services to the energy sector. We conduct independent sampling of transformer fluids from onshore and offshore equipment according to the IEC 60475 standard and sampling equipment according to the IEC 60567 standard.

Transformer Oil Condition Monitoring

Transformers can malfunction if neglected over time, and failure to conduct regular transformer oil testing means problems go undetected. Transformers and insulating oils are subject to electrical and mechanical stresses during operation. As a result, the original chemical properties of transformer oil change gradually, often rendering it ineffective for its intended use after some time. Regular monitoring of the oil enables potential issues of both the transformer and the oil to be diagnosed.

Why Test Transformer Oils?

Transformer oil analysis can help you:

  • Monitor the health of oil and transformers.
  • Take early remedial action before potentially dangerous and costly unit failure occurs.
  • Control stability and insulation performance.
  • Address health, safety, and environmental concerns.

Acceptance of Oil-Filled Transformers

A substantial proportion of electrical equipment is supplied to the final user pre-filled with mineral insulating oil. In such cases, as the oil has already been in contact with insulating and other materials, it can no longer be considered "unused oil" as defined in IEC 60296. This oil will be regarded as oils in service, even though the electrical equipment itself may not have been energised.

Bureau Veritas provides comprehensive analytical services for the acceptance of new oil-filled transformers, ensuring confidence in their performance.

Supervision and maintenance guidelines can be found in:

  • IEC 60422: Mineral insulating oils in electrical equipment.

  • IEC 60944: Silicone transformer liquids.

  • IEC 61203: Synthetic organic esters for electrical purposes.

  • IEC 62975: Natural esters for electrical purposes.
